Paper Transistor

Paper transistor is one of the most important inventions in modern times. It revolutionized electronics and unlocked new and much, much smaller circuits. Portuguese researchers have produced the first paper-based transistors. To be more precise, they have made the first field effect transistors (FET) with a paper interstrate layer. According to the research team, these new transistors offer the same level of performance as 'state-of-the-art oxide based thin film transistors (TFTs) produced on glass or crystalline silicon substrates.

A common paper sheet is used on both sides in the fabrication of the paper transistor. It means paper is used instead of silicon which was invented by a Portuguese team and is manufactured at ambient temperature. This way, the paper acts simultaneously as the electric insulator and as the substrate. Furthermore, electric characterization of devices showed that the hybrid FETs' performance outpace those of amorphous silicon TFTs, and rival with the actual state of the art of oxide thin film transistors.

There is an increased interest in the use of biopolymers for low-cost electronic applications. Since cellulose is the Earth's major biopolymer, some international teams have reported using paper as the physical support (substrate) of electronic devices but no one had used paper as an interstrate component of a FET.

The cellulose not only used as substrate but also act as electric insulator by fabricating the device on both sides of the paper. Add to that the paper transistor outperforms the amorphous silicon thin-film transistor used in modern LCD displays and is up to par with the very latest oxide thin-film transistors, which are still a rare sight.

Since paper is a flexible and a biomaterial it would open up new possibilities for bendable displays, bio-labeling, small and cheap displays that could be used for labeling of varies things and more. Our only concern so far is the degradability, i.e. the lifespan of displays made from paper.
These results suggest promising new disposable electronics devices, like paper displays, smart labels, smart packaging, bio-applications and RFID tags.

  • Excellent large screen replacement for 32" CRT TVs
  • BRAVIA Engine¿ EX full digital video processing system
  • Xross Media Bar (XMB¿) on-screen menu system
  • S-Force¿ Surround 3-D audio effect

Product Description :

3LCD Chips --- The 3LCD technology at the heart of Sony's BRAVIA¿ televisions provide a bright picture, with high detail and natural color. These three key benefits are immediately apparent when viewing a BRAVIA¿ TV. You can expect to see an incredibly detailed picture with eye-popping colors. Sony uses three tiny LCD chips (0.73) with a combined resolution of over 2.76 million pixels. The light from a high output UHP lamp shines into a filtering system that splits the beam into red, green, and blue light streams. Each color goes through its own LCD chip, which passes or blocks the light. The three beams are then instantaneously recombined and sent to the projection lens. BRAVIA Engine¿ EX System --- The BRAVIA Engine¿ EX video processing system came about as a result of Sony's expertise and long heritage in bringing cutting-edge picture quality to consumer televisions. It contains intelligent picture enhancement technology that reduces unwanted digital artifacts and delivers superb clarity and detail along with vivid colors. Sony's own Digital Reality Creation Multi-function v1.0 (DRC-MFv1) processor replaces the original SD signal with its HD equivalent. The result of BRAVIA Engine EX processing? Picture quality has texture and detail, deep and vibrant colors, along with excellent depth and contrast.

Samsung UN65C6500 LED HD TV Review

Samsung UN65C6500 65-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV

I don't know why this happens, but, being an HD TV freak, I seem to have developed a little clique of friends with a similar keen interest in the latest HD TV technology - funny that! So, it was no surprise when one of my HD Buddies called to say he'd just taken delivery of a new LED TV. I was excited for him anyway, but when he told me he'd gone and got a Samsung UN65C6500 I was taken aback...so I just had to go and have a look!

Itching for our Friday night rendezvous to arrive, I finally turned up (half an hour early) to see what all the fuss was

about...I wasn't going to be disappointed!

Clearly the Samsung UN65C6500 is a very BIG LED TV. You need a big room for this beast. With a full LED crystal pixelated screen, it is a big lump of solid crystal that delivers a full 1080p HD picture of stunning clarity and beauty. Bright, beautiful colors against deep rich blacks that are just...so black! The contrast makes watching the picture a brilliant experience.

I was slightly worried that such a big set was only offering a 120Hz screen refresh and half expected some motion blur. Having said that I know that was an "old" LCD problem, but I just felt a 65 Inch screen with only 120 Hz refresh might be an issue - I needn't have worried. It did strike me as strange that, particularly Samsung, would compromise on this, maybe it would have pushed the price too high? This set isn't cheap!

Having said that, the picture performance was quite stunning and despite me trying my best to find evidence of fast motion blur, it just wasn't there!

I've got a 46 inch LED screen at home and it's just right for the viewing area but I was interested to see how such a large screen compared. To be fair, Dave has a large room that is given over totally to his TV and Theater system. I have to say that the comparison was favourable, and despite my home set being 240Hz, I really didn't notice any difference in picture quality particularly once we got stuck into the latest episode of Flash Forward from the HD box.

Action sequences were smooth and accurate and of course colors were sharp, bright and the contrast with deep blacks superb.

One of the downsides of LED in general is that their thinness means sound quality (from the set) is often lacking.

We gave it a few minutes using just the TV sound and it was true to form. But, hooked up to Dave's home theater system offered an outstanding overall experience (especially as Dave has been fastidious in his speaker set up).

I thought I might find going back to my own 46 inch a bit of a come down, but I do genuinely believe that the viewing room size to TV set size is a vital factor here. My room just couldn't cope with the Samsung UN65C6500 65 Inch LED HD TV.

I loved watching the Samsung UN65C6500 LED TV but Dave's set up is dedicated, everything is totally tailored for

his 65 inch wonder! My viewing area is more "public" so I think it's horses for courses to be honest.

The Samsung UN65C6500 65 Inch LED has the same power saving features that are available on all LED TV's so...it's kind on your power bills and good for the environment, which I like.

The connectivity options on the Samsung UN65C6500 LED TV are numerous. It has every possible connectivity port you could possibly want. Consequently you get superb game play, built in photo library, USB ports, the ability to host peripherals, media 2.0 a PC input and an ethernet input as well as 4 HMDI inputs. It's also DNLA compatible which means that you can plug and play pretty much any computer or mobile device.

Finally the Samsung UN65C6500 LED TV is super slim and is a lovely piece of furniture as well...I do like the look of these super-slim LED TVs!

Final word. If you have a largeish budget and a viewing room to match the Samsung UN65C6500 65 Inch LED TV is a quality buy that has a definite wow factor.

I highlighted the 120 Hz refresh rate earlier and Samsung are sure to upgrade and come out with a 240Hz version sooner or later. On that basis I might be tempted to hold off until the 240Hz version is available. But, as with all technology...is there ever a right time to buy? Maybe just go with the flow and if you want one of these amazing "beasts" go get it!

This is a big purchase and whilst the best prices are undoubtedly online, if you are thinking of buying a Samsung UN65C6500 65 Inch LED HD TV I do recommend a visit at your local store to check it out...then buy online (provided the price is right - which it should be online).

LED TV Review of a Samsung HDTV

Okay first the bad news. The new LED HDTV sets are great and you are going to want to get one if you take a good look at the picture. So if you are considering looking at LED technology I suggest you stay away from the big box store if you intend to exercise some restraint. They look that good!

But there are also a few warnings about the most recent technology out on the market which of course is 3D HDTV. Now, I'm not going to lie to you here. 3D is a really cool technology and it looks incredible but after hearing a few of my colleagues complain about headaches and dizziness I started to look a bit deeper. Turns out there are some warnings you may want to know about.

I'm not overly hung up over this because I plan to get a 3D TV and use it for regular Blu Ray Discs - not 3D Blu Ray. I plan to see how many reports of weakened vision and accidents from watching 3D TV first - just to be safe. Read on...

These warnings are published on Samsung literature and accompany your 3D HDTV set when unpacking your unit.

3D LED HD TV Warnings - LED TV review report from Samsung Warning Labels:

• "Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images" Samsung said on its website.

• "Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games.

• "If you suffer from, or have a family history of epilepsy or strokes, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function" Samsung says.

• It's not just those who are already aware they might have problems that are at risk though.

• "Even those without a personal or family history of epilepsy or stroke may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause photosensitive epileptic seizures" said Samsung.

• "Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilizing the unit's 3D functionality.

• "Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability"

• Samsung are recommending that viewers take frequent breaks from watching 3D TV in order to lessen the potential effects.

• "If your eyes show signs of fatigue or dryness or if you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume using it for at least thirty minutes after the symptoms have subsided"

Maybe I'm just psychotic but frankly I'm not real concerned about these warnings. I don't plan to watch 3D TV all day, every day. I just want to use it when watching a movie once or twice a week at the max. My total exposure to TV is maybe 2 hours every 2 weeks. I suppose if you planned to watch the news in 3D you may (or could) experience more severe problems.

Like everything else including watching television... ALL things in moderation folks! You should not drink gallons of alcohol in one sitting and you probably should not watch 6 hours of TV everyday either.

As Americans we usually don't know when to quit. It is estimated that the average teenager watches 4 hours of TV everyday. What a total waste of time... You can raise your kids however you like, but you are personally responsible for their ability to contribute anything useful to society. Sitting in front of the TV 4 hours a day or even 1 hour in my view is ridiculous. We need to find something useful to occupy our minds and entertain our children.

I think the above warnings are probably issued for Americans. (yes, I am an American) Now, I love American, I love this country, and I love what it was founded on. So when Samsung puts a warning in their HDTV boxes about excessive use of 3D HDTV it makes me wonder who the warning was intended for. And I think the finger is pointing at US.

Why should You get a 3D HDTV anyway?

Emerging technology indicates that the tech field is going to keep moving at a very fast clip. Even if you never used the 3D technology available on the set you purchased if you buy a 3D TV you have the capability. The prices are a bit more -but if you plan to spend a couple grand on a set whats a few hundred dollars more?

And, when you are ready to upgrade to a 3D blu Ray Player you won't have to buy a brand new TV set. So, to me it just makes sense to plan ahead.

My LED HDTV picks - Highest Quality sets at Top, Moving Down to Budget sets at the Bottom; These are non 3D HDTV set picks:

Samsung UN55B8500 $4000: - sets the bar high for all HDTV sets to beat. The buck stops here. Awesome everything! The big Samsung has local dimming on the LED's and incredible color. Phenomenal HDTV set! (Not cheap!)

LG 55LH90 around $1800 online: This set is much less expensive than the Samsung UN55B8500 model and it is nearly as good. This is my favorite HDTV out of this group and for the money - you can't go wrong here! But if you have the big bucks go for the Samsung above. The big LG is very tough to beat at this price point.

Samsung UN46B8000 $2000 online: (Amazon) offer incredible black levels and performance. A good price for this unit.

Samsung LN46B750 $1350 online: (Amazon) This set is not an LED but a typical LCD. However, you may be hard pressed to notice. This is a great conventional back-lit model and worth every penny.

Samsung LN40B650 $1000 online and is a good value set that outperforms most sets in this price range. This little Samsung is very hard to beat at this price.

LG 37LH30 $700-$750 online: This budget 37 inch HDTV does not have a perfect picture due to uneven screen brightness and black levels but performs very well within its price constraints.

Vizio VO320E $500 online: 32 inch budget display is a great Vizio LCD TV with good overall picture quality. If used with a decent blu ray player provides a convincing HD picture on a budget.

Vizio VA19L around $200: 19 inch budget display has a great image and would work well for a kitchen, bedroom, or patio set.

These are all regualar 2D HDTV sets. The 3D sets are being tested now and we will have our results out soon. If you are in the market for a 2D set one of the above HDTVs should work great for you.

The HDTV scene is changing so fast it is difficult to keep up with all the advancements. I have always felt that a purchase should be made when the technology matures a bit. I do plan to get a 3D HDTV but I will probably wait a little while. If you must get a set and are not concerned with 3D the sets listed above are highly recommended not just by myself but all over the web.

As always enjoy your Entertainment!

Samsung UN55C8000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV Review - A Review For Serious Buyer!

Samsung has always been a leading innovator when it comes to televisions. From technologically advanced TV sets to simple ones, it has always been at the forefront of the industry. Every time the words high def TV or LCD is mentioned Samsung is the first name that comes to mind. It only goes to show how popular the brand is. To me, it epitomizes crystal clear display.

It has paved the way for its competitors. Check the Samsung UN55C8000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV. It has garnered several awards since it was launched. It is actually included in the list of top rated HDTVs in the year 2010. Be forewarned though that just like any other TV it has its good points and bad ones, or should I say areas that still need improvement.

It's sleek design and shiny, elegant black color is something fashionistas will approve of and love. It will easily fit in any room. Your room won't look cluttered or overcrowded after you set it up. More space for your aesthetic pursuits.

The TV's visual performance is above average. The vibrant colors will surely make your screen look alive. Blues are blue, reds are red, and colors are exactly how they look in real life. It's like watching the real thing and not just an image on your screen.

Deep black performance has always been the bane of HDTVs. Sadly this TV is not an exception to that. When this is impaired the dark colors will become brighter and it will affect the overall color contrast. You will surely notice that something is amiss with the display. Designers are yet to find a permanent fix for this. So consumers will just have to put up with this for the meantime.

It has auto dim capacity which unfortunately cannot be disabled. It is a feature which you will just have to live with. This is something that's negligible. I'm sure when you start using the TV you'll barely notice this. As I've mentioned earlier this TV is not yet perfect, there are still some aspects of the design that needs improvement, but to be fair to the designers though they did a pretty good job. Now let's focus our attention back to what's great with this TV.

It supports format that enables you to play high definition shows. This is essential because more and more devices are now veered towards high def. More and more customers are replacing their current TV sets. There will come a time when all networks will broadcast nothing but high def shows. If you still don't have a high def TV set by then that could be a problem.

This TV can convert 2D images to 3D however the image quality is not that good. All you need to do is purchase 3D glasses and 3D players which are available in local stores and you can now complete you 3D experience. More and more movies are also now in 3D. Think Shrek and Avatar. It has a 240Hz refresh rate which lessens blurry images which especially important when you're playing games or when you're viewing fast paced action.

This has two HDMI ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, one VGA output and one digital audio output. You can connect your digital camera, thumb drives and flash drives. You can also connect the TV to your PC thru the VGA port. Aside from watching your favorite shows you can also music, videos and pictures. You can also use Wi-Fi by connecting thru the Ethernet port, however, you need to use an additional device called a USB dongle and connect it to one of the USB ports to use the Wi-Fi feature.

With the Samsung UN55C8000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV you can think out of the box and get more than the regular TV. You can have more than just a regular life.

Top 5 HDTVs for 2010

If you haven't bought a new TV set for a good 4 or 5 years, then 2010 is the year to do so. The future of TV sets is about improved quality, slimness and 3D capability. CES 2010 in Las Vegas came to an end on the 10th of January. After taking a close look at the HDTVs on display, we’ve outlined the trends predicted for 2010 and shortlisted this year’s most exciting launches.
After a year of speculation, top TV manufacturers confirmed that 2010 will be the year of 3D television - with manufacturers like LG, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba announcing that 3D TV sets will be on sale in the UK by April. With Sky announcing that 3D broadcasting will be available by October, we strongly recommend that if you are planning on investing in a new HDTV set, go for a 3D one.
OLED is also set to be the next big thing in picture quality. The only problem is that manufacturers like LG can only make OLED TV as big as 15 inches; however we expect to see bigger sets over the next few years as the technology inevitably advances. OLED (which stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode) produces super crisp pictures with unbelievable quality and definition.
So, that’s enough small talk. Let’s get down to our list of best HDTV's set to hit the shops in 2010…
LG Infinia LE9500 3D-Ready LED TV
For those who were lucky enough to be at this year’s CES will testify that LG’s 6.9mm model is the world's thinnest LED TV. LG’s Infinia LE9500 3D-Ready LED TV comes equipped with an arsenal of innovations that includes 3D–Ready support, Skype capabilities and streaming media from Netflix, VUDU, YouTube, Napster and Yahoo! Widgets.. With this model, LG have broken conventions of LED TV design by transforming the screen into the actual speakers - which allows it to be so thin without compromising sound quality.
Toshiba Cell TVs
Besides using the same type of processor used in the PlayStation 3 and offering native 3D capability, Toshiba has packed its next generation of HDTVs with every feature we ever dreamed of. Toshiba also claims that, thanks to a new technology called TriVector Cell, TV series will be able to convert 2D content into 3D content in real time. No demo was available so we'll have to hold off our judgement for now.
Samsung LED 9000 Series
The 900 series is the next gen of Samsung's LED LCD TVs and the flagship model the Samsung C9000 is perhaps one of the slickest TV sets we’ve ever set eyes on. Just so you can comprehend the C900’s sleekness: the model is the same width as a number two pencil. The Samsung C900 is of course 3D, and is also capable of converting 2D content into 3D, again no demo was available.
LG 15-inch OLED TV
Despite its size, the LG 15-inch OLED TV is the biggest possible OLED TV to date, but give a few more years and we'll see 26, 36, 47-inch OLED TV sets. OLED is the future of HDTV, this LG OLED produces super crisp picture with and absolutely stunning picture quality.
Sony 3D Bravia TV
As expected, Sony also caught the 3D flu that contaminated the world's top television manufacturers and also introduced a new series of 3D TVs at this year's CES. Sony will offer three separate lines of 3D Bravia HDTVs. The LX900 series, due out this summer, is available in size up to 60 inches and includes an edge-lit LED backlight system. Other features include 240Hz processing, integrated WiFi and two active shutter glasses for watching 3D content. It features what Sony calls a Monolithic industrial design with a smooth glass surface from edge to edge.
The consumer electronics giant also used the 3D wave to introduce its first 3D-capable Blu-ray player with WiFi connectivity and instant streaming of online content.

Best LED HDTV-LG 47LE5400 47-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV Reviews

for the LG 47LE5400 47-Inch Edge Lit LED/LCD 1080p HDTV! (what a mouthful!) This is a new model and Amazons date for "first available is wrong.
After much comparison, and much online and in-store research I decided to plunk down my hard earned cash on this bad boy. So far, I am very glad I did.
My criteria for purchase was a screen no larger than 47 inches (to preserve the image quality of my AVI files and SD programming) and also something that had perfect geometry (unlike the Mitsubishi DLP that recently died on me) and something that would display and maintain a bright uniform picture. (unlike my Pioneer Plasma did) I also had hoped for a display that could display a 50hz PAL video signal as long as it was first upconverted to 720p or higher. (The LG will NOT display a 576 line image , but will take that image if upconverted , even while remaining 50hz so no format conversion is required for motion correctness, just upconversion to 720p / 1080i or 1080p)
Purchased the set at a brick and mortar location (initials are BB) so in case things didn't work out I could return or exchange it with no problems. I easily carried the box inside my house (I am pushing 60 with arthritis) and had the stand assembled and mounted on the TV in about 20 minutes total from bringing in the box. The TV is packed well, but not filled with unnecessary packaging material. There is a quick start guide included and the entire manual resides on a CD-Rom which I personally HATE but at least you can't spill things on it right? Also included were warranty materials, a separate set of instructions and CD-ROM for the web connectivity stuff , some cable adapters, a cleaning cloth and the remote with two AAA batteries.
The TV was in perfect condition, wrapped in that foam cloth stuff and with the prerequisite plastic film over the frame bezel. Easy to remove all of that stuff and it didn't leave any trace of sticky residue which was nice. Jacks are group on the rear left with the USB and headphone jacks on the left side but behind the bezel. This TV is very thin and not all that secure on it's stand. The stand is fine, but I would recommend strapping it down whenever you put it unless you use a wall mount of some kind. Just sitting on a table you are one false move away from turning your beautiful LED TV into a doorstop. And the TV itself is very nice to look at, very easy on the eyes really.
I am not currently using the web connectivity stuff or the Netflix online feature so I can not comment on those functions in this review. If they work as well as the rest of the unit, things should be fine. While it is 'internet ready' it does not include a wireless dongle so you either need to physically connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable, or purchase a USB wireless dongle from LG . (Yes, they are proprietary, unfortunately)
Connected my HDMI cables from my Fios DVR and Oppo Blu Ray and plugged in the power. This TV will power up and ask you if you want 'home use' or "store use' which is of course flame thrower mode. Pick 'home use' and go from there. Just remember which inputs you plugged what into so you can easily get to them. The manual will tell you how to custom label your inputs if you can't remember HDMI 1 or 2 or so forth.
The first thing I did was set the picture to "Standard" and then lower the back light, the contrast, the brightness and color and even sharpness levels. Then I went into the advanced settings menu and turned off all the noise reduction and cut the auto contrast setting down to low. The TV will not look all that great out of the box as it is meant to attract your attention in the store, but those setting are pretty useless at home if you want your picture to look rich and natural. All in all, it took me maybe 15 minutes to get a starting point where I could watch and be more than happy with the picture.
You can download the manual from LG's website and get to know this unit before you purchase. That's what I did and it saved me tons of time. LG also includes a 'Picture Wizard' that helps you to easily and quickly calibrate an input to your taste and achieve fairly accurate color and proper contrast and brightness. You can then assign that setting to any input or inputs you wish and save it . You can do this twice and save each one with the 'Expert' function and of course you can adjust the other preset picture modes and save them as well. LOTS of options in that regard!
A word about the 120Hz True Motion. Like hot sauce, a little goes a long way. LG offers you your choice of ON, OFF, LOW, HIGH and USER. In the user mode you can adjust both judder AND motion blur separately which is a big improvement in software for this model I think. To me, the True Motion gives you almost the same effect as watching a video tape rather than a film. It does lend itself to some program material, making certain things appear even more real, a sort of hyper reality. It does introduce some other artifacts into the picture quality that you may or may not notice and ultimately you may decide not to use it at all. The good news is, it can be switched off but also adjusted to suit your needs and personal taste. Does it completely eliminate motion blur? Not by a long shot! For now, motion blur is something that is inherent in LCD displays. Maybe someday they will find a way to get them to switch on and off quicker (the pixels) and perhaps start putting some beefier processing chips into these things as well. As it is, on very rare occasions the display seems to 'skip a beat' and the chip seems to be temporarily overloaded. It all happens in a blink of an eye and is over before it started, but it DOES happen.
The dreaded lip sync issue that you may have heard about regarding LG has happened to me once so far after changing channels on my DVR. I had to shut off the display and reboot and it went away the first time. I plan to update the firmware as soon as I connect to my Cable router and hopefully it will be a thing of the past. I have used it heavily for more than a week and it has only happened once so far.
My BIGGEST criteria for selecting my new TV was it's ability to play PAL DVD video with no conversion. I have a very large collection of British and European DVD's and am not happy with 'converting' them to NTSC even with my Oppo. By making some sense out of the LG specs I had guessed it might be able to display PAL properly with no format (50 to 60hz) conversion, resulting in a much better picture than standard DVD could ever provide. IT WORKS PEREFCTLY! (but you MUST first upconvert it to 720p or 1080i or 1080p for the LG to be able to display it. Any upconverting DVD player can accomplish that for you!) So far, only my Pioneer Plasma could display PAL without conversion so this was a huge plus for me. My Babylon 5 PAL DVD's look VERY close to HD and a real revelation, not to mention my LOTR Extended Editions in glorious PAL!! Also, standard NTSC DVD video is quite good, depending on your player and source material and off the air (or off Fios in my case) SD material looks very good. And it goes without saying that Blu Ray or HD DVD material will simply blow you away once the set is even basically calibrated.
By the end of the day I had both my DVR and Blu Ray inputs calibrated to my liking and I must say the overall picture quality is nothing short of excellent. Sounds is 'ok' , not too awful, but not good enough to satisfy a movie lover. (hook up to a surround system and you will be glad you did)
So far, I have just ONE complaint and for many people this is a big one. In a word, FLASHLIGHTING !
This is when the LED's which illuminate the LCD pixels shine through the edges of the picture and make there way in to dark areas on your screen, such as night time, or a fade out . During any other time the picture is outstanding, but no matter how low I set the back light (within reason) you can easily see it during any dark scnes. I personally have chosen to ignore this problem and just enjoy the TV.
You will not notice the flashlighting problem in the store. They make sure and supply program material that never goes dark on the edges so any deficiencies in contrast or flashlighting are hidden from the consumer. Bring your own USB drive with a movie that features a lot of dark scenes, the new Harry Potter comes to mind, and you will see for yourself. That's of course if they let you do that!
I had also considered the Vizio 47 inch LED LCD set for about the same price and IT features local dimming on the LED array which eliminates this flashlighting problem. I just don't feel comfortable yet with Vizio as a brand and opted for the LG. Videophiles would think I am nuts, but there you have it! Neither Vizio nor the king of local dimming LED, Samsung ,can display native PAL video. I feel I made the right choice for me anyway.
This TV really provides you with a HUGE wealth of signal processing tools (adjustments) to shape your picture quality any way you want it to be. There are 2 expert modes that let you tweak and calibrate to your hearts content, and not even my Pio Kuro had this amount of control over it. Honestly, except for the flashlighting problem I am totally happy with this LG. Honestly, I can live with it, but many could not. I would say the average person would rarely, if ever notice it , but it IS there and as such a deal breaker for many would be buyers.
With that said, This TV seems to be well made with a good solid build quality, the remote is much better than most (although I just use a Harmony One for everything) and it does everything I want it to do and more. Now lets see if the thing holds up to heavy use. As a parting thought I would recommend going with some form of extended warranty. Either thru the place of purchase or perhaps a company like Square Trade would be good as they allow you to purchase your extended warranty any time during the original warranty of your product. HAPPY TV SHOPPING!
UPDATE 5/30/10 : After 3 weeks of using this TV, and taking the time to properly calibrate the inputs (using Digital Video essentials and THX Optimizer) I have come to some conclusions......
The 5400 performs VERY well for SD sources, both AVI based , Standard DVD and SD cable channels. (subject to whatever compression our cable company or DVD manufacturer has added) Xvid encoded files rate very good to almost HD in appearance. Really nice! The vertical banding is only visible during extremely WHITE based scenes with side to side camera pans. It is bothersome at times, but I am choosing to ignore it in favor of this sets strong points. I continue to be amazed by the quality off unconverted Pal DVD playback on this thing. My Fios premium channels have taken on an almost 3D quality and I sometimes find myself just staring at this thing in wonder and shaking my head in disbelief at times. No kidding! . If you spent another thousand or so on a top local dimming Samsung you could do better, otherwise I feel this TV is a winner and I still have NO buyers remorse. I put my new Mitsubishi DLP (newly repaired) in my walk-in closet in case of disaster striking the LG. I see the USB wireless adapter is finally available so I will be ordering that next month and checking out the Netflix performance and other widgets and content providers.
UPDATE 6-14-10 Finally got around to connecting to the net with this thing. It was very easy. I just plugged in an Ethernet cable from my router and it instantly set itself up with no help from me. Went about programming the Yahoo Widgets next and while it was a bit painstaking, it worked fine. Set up my You Tube account as well and after signing in (and telling it to stay signed in) it works like a charm. Netflix will be next in just 2 weeks, but for now it all looks and works great. I have a fast net connection so I don't foresee any trouble with Netlfix, even the HD content. My final update will be posted after checking out Netflix performance..... Stay Tuned....
FINAL UPDATE 6-16-10
OK, I can give a good report on the Network capabilities and user interface . Right now I am connected to my computer and extra hard drives on a wireless LAN set up in my media room. I have the LG connected directly to my router via the Ethernet connection. (didn't want to chance the bandwidth with their wireless dongle) I am running a very inexpensive Compaq (under 300 bucks new) and using Nero Media Home 4 as my server software even though Windows 7 includes such software of their own. The LG is optimized for the Nero program and the basic version is included with your TV purchase from LG. I set up my computer for Network sharing and let er rip!
How does it work? IN a word............. G R E A T !!! So fa the LG can hand ALL formats I have thrown at it. It outperforms (by miles) an Asus O'Play and even the USB playback of my Oppo BDP-80. I am getting flawless playback, even on HD files of large size and bitrates. The user interface is nice. There are many options and it is intuitive. The software on the LG even remembers your place if you stop a file and wish to resume later. It is very well thought out for an added extra. With this modest system I have in place, it is like having my very own on demand channel that only plays the stuff I love! I really can't say enough good things about the performance. It is truly great and so much nicer than the little standalone media players on the market right now.
So after almost a month now, I totally LOVE this TV !! Honestly, I am not all that hip about computers and networks and i got it to work within a few hours and beyond any of my expectations. Just plugging in a USB hard drive or thumb drive to the TV jacks and bypassing networking would be simple as can be and yield the same excellent results. And this is just a bonus feature. WOW! I am SO glad I bought this TV and hope other folks with similar needs will try this out and see for themselves. I am SOLD on LG for now!
